August Skincare Reset: 7 Simple Tips for Healthier Skin This Month in Ohio

August is here, and if you've lived in Ohio for very long, you know what that means.

Hot afternoons.

Humidity.

Sweaty workouts.

Air conditioning.

And before we know it... fall will be knocking on the door.

This is actually one of my favorite times of the year to check in on your skincare routine. A few small changes now can make a huge difference as we head into the cooler months.

Here are some of the biggest conversations we've been having with clients lately at Wild Orchid Esthetics. These products are customized recommendations after facial appointments and skin assessments.

1. Sweat Isn't the Problem... It's What Happens After

Summer in Ohio means more time outside, more workouts, and a lot more sweating.

Sweating itself isn't bad for your skin.

The problem starts when sweat, oil, and bacteria sit on your face for hours afterward.

If you're heading to work after the gym or spending the day outdoors, consider keeping the Magic Molecule Hypochlorous Acid Spray in your gym bag. It's a quick and easy way to refresh your skin, calm irritation, and help reduce bacteria until you have a chance to properly wash your face.

One small habit like this can go a long way toward preventing unnecessary breakouts.

2. Your Moisturizer and SPF Shouldn't Be the Same Product

One thing we've been talking about with several clients recently is hydration.

Many people rely on their sunscreen as their moisturizer.

While some SPF products provide hydration, they're designed to protect your skin—not necessarily keep it moisturized throughout the day.

Adding a lightweight moisturizer underneath your sunscreen can make a noticeable difference, especially if your skin feels tight or dry by the afternoon.

If you're looking for a simple hydration boost, ask us about Hydro Remedy Gel Serum, available here at Wild Orchid Esthetics, or consider adding a Good Molecules Hyaluronic Acid Serum to your routine

3. Exfoliation Is About Consistency, Not Scrubbing Harder

A lot of people think better skin comes from exfoliating every day.

Usually, it doesn't.

For most people, exfoliating one to two evenings each week is plenty.

One of our favorite beginner-friendly options is the Good Molecules Pineapple Exfoliating Powder. This gentle enzyme exfoliator helps remove dead skin cells, brighten your complexion, and allows your other skincare products to absorb more effectively.

Slow and steady almost always wins.

4. Don't Wait Until Fall to Hydrate Your Skin

Believe it or not, we've seen a lot of dehydrated skin this summer.

Air conditioning, swimming, sun exposure, and heat all pull moisture from your skin.

Adding a hydrating serum can help your skin hold onto moisture and prepare it for the drier weather that's right around the corner.

Some of our favorites include:

  • Good Molecules Hyaluronic Acid Serum

  • Innisfree Green Tea Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Think of August as the month to start preparing—not reacting.

5. Healthy Skin Starts With Clean Tools

This tip doesn't get talked about enough.

If you shave your face, shave your head, or use makeup brushes regularly, make cleaning your tools part of your routine.

Dirty razors, clippers, and brushes can hold onto bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells.

If you use clippers regularly, I recommend the Barbicide Clippercide Aerosol Spray to disinfect and lubricate your blades between uses.

Sometimes clearer skin has less to do with buying another product and more to do with taking care of the tools you're already using.

6. More Products Doesn't Mean Better Skin

One of my favorite things to tell clients is:

"You don't need a 12-step skincare routine."

Some of the best results we've seen recently came from adding just one or two products—not replacing everything.

Maybe that's:

Simple routines are often the easiest to stay consistent with.

7. Healthy Skin Takes Time

If I could leave you with one piece of advice this month, it would be this:

Be patient with your skin.

Dark spots don't disappear overnight.

Dry skin isn't fixed in one facial.

Acne doesn't clear after one good skincare day.

Healthy skin is built one routine at a time.

Small habits.

Small improvements.

Consistent care.

That's where the magic happens.

Looking Ahead to Fall

Over the next several weeks here in Ohio, we'll begin shifting many of our clients toward more hydrating routines as the weather starts to cool.

We'll be talking more about:

  • Repairing the skin barrier

  • Choosing the right moisturizer

  • Hydrating serums

  • Gentle exfoliation

  • Preparing your skin for cooler weather

The best time to prepare your skin for fall is before your skin starts asking for help.
